ST. CROIX — More than a year after a shooting near the Frederiksted Fish Market left three people wounded, the V.I. Police Department says the suspect identified in the case is now in custody after turning himself in at the Wilbur Francis Command Police Station.
According to VIPD, the case dates back to March 2, 2025, at about 3:15 p.m., when the 911 Emergency Call Center received a report of multiple shots fired in the vicinity of the Frederiksted Fish Market.
Police officers from the Patrol Division responded to the scene and made contact with two gunshot victims there, according to the department. A third gunshot victim later traveled to the hospital by private vehicle. VIPD also said multiple spent cartridge casings were found on the roadway.
The case was then assigned to a detective with the Criminal Investigation Bureau, whose investigation identified Donnie Heywood as a suspect in the shooting, police said.
VIPD said an arrest warrant for Heywood was signed by a Superior Court judge on March 1, 2026.
Police say Heywood, 19, turned himself in on March 19 at the Wilbur Francis Command Police Station.
He was arrested and charged with attempted murder, possession of ammunition, carrying a firearm during a crime of violence, aiming or discharging, first-degree reckless endangerment, first and third-degree assault.
VIPD said bail was set at $100,000.
After being booked, Heywood was transported to the John Bell Correctional Facility pending his Advice of Rights Hearing.
