ST. CROIX — A shocking incident unfolded on Friday according to the V.I. Police Department, as a man was charged with first-degree murder for allegedly striking his co-worker with his vehicle.
The victim, identified as 54-year-old Ersdale I. Joseph of Estate Frederikshabb, was found unresponsive at the scene by Emergency Medical Services, the V.I.P.D. reported.
The suspect, 64-year-old Hubert Lee Sr. of Clifton Hill, initially reported to the Anselmo Marshall Command Police Precinct that a co-worker had fired a shot at him while he was on his way to work at the Grapetree Bay Hotel. Lee claimed that he saw his co-worker in the middle of the road, pointing and discharging a firearm at him, which impacted his windshield.
At 07:40 a.m. Friday, the 911 Emergency Call Center received a call from another individual, who stated that the victim had been struck by a white taxi van with yellow and green stripes, and that the driver had left the scene. Upon investigation, the police determined that the incident was a willful act and not an accident, and that Hubert Lee Sr. had used his vehicle as the weapon to murder Ersdale I. Joseph.
Hubert Lee Sr. was formally arrested and charged with first-degree murder. His bail was set at $1,000,000, which he was unable to secure. Lee was booked, processed, and transported to the John Bell Correctional Facility, where he awaits his advised of rights hearing on Monday, April 17.
