ST. CROIX — A man who allegedly robbed the Spicy Grill Restaurant in Estate Golden Grove on Nov. 18 returned Wednesday to attempt the crime a second time but was arrested, the V.I. Police Department has announced.

According to a release from the department, on Wednesday at 2:29 p.m. the 911 Emergency Call Center dispatched Wilbur Francis Command units to a possible robbery at the restaurant after information was provided that a heavy-set black male entered the business. The individual was recognized as the same suspect from a previous robbery at the restaurant on November 18. Officers were advised of the suspect’s path of flight and they pursued, spotted and arrested him.

The suspect, later identified as 21-year-old Akemoi Simmonds — a suspect in the 2020 robbery attempt of the KFC Restaurant in Sunny Isle — was arrested at 2:41 p.m. and charged with third-degree robbery.

Unable to post bail of $25,000, Simmonds was remanded to the John Bell Correctional Facility pending his advisement hearing scheduled for Friday, Dec. 9.

Simmonds is a student at the University of the Virgin Islands and is currently on conditional release from two previous robberies in 2020, including the KFC matter where shots were fired at an officer pursuing Simmonds and another suspect.
