Jahmar Frederick, 32, of St. Croix, was sentenced Wednesday to 24 months in prison for possessing a firearm as a felon, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of the Virgin Islands has announced. Visiting District Court Judge Timothy Savage also imposed three years of supervised release and a $100 special assessment.
According to court documents, the case stemmed from an incident on May 11, 2024, when a V.I. Police Department officer observed a Ford F-150 pickup truck without a license plate near the Frontline Bar and Grill.
The vehicle fled from the officer before losing control and sliding off the roadway, authorities said. The driver, later identified as Frederick, then pulled a ski mask over his face and continued fleeing on foot before falling and being apprehended.
When officers caught him, Frederick had a fanny pack strapped across his chest containing a black Glock model 22 Gen4 .40 caliber firearm. The weapon was fitted with a 30-round magazine holding 18 rounds of ammunition, with one round chambered, according to the release.
Federal prosecutors also noted that Frederick has three prior felony convictions. In 2018, he was convicted of forgery and of failing to report firearms obtained outside or brought into the Virgin Islands. In 2023, he was convicted of obtaining money by false pretenses.
The case was investigated by Homeland Security Investigations and the V.I. Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Rhonda Williams-Henry prosecuted the matter for the District of the Virgin Islands.
