ST. CROIX — A man has been brought before the courts after he allegedly attacked his girlfriend during an argument.

Randy Persad is charged with simple assault and battery as a crime of domestic violence. According to documents submitted to the court, on Tuesday morning police officers responded to reports of a domestic violence incident. They met the alleged victim who said that Persaud assaulted her during one of several arguments the previous day. According to the woman, during one of the arguments, she turned away from Persad to look out the window and when she turned back she observed him approaching her aggressively. He then allegedly head-butted her to the face and elbowed her to the torso.

The woman explained that her minor daughter was in the house at the time and overheard the incident. She began screaming out her daughter’s name and eventually ran to her bleeding from the mouth. According to her statement, she tried to leave Persad’s residence on the day of the alleged incident, but she had no transportation and no place to stay as she had only recently moved to St. Croix. She told police that she feared for her safety at the time, noting that Persad is an ex-marine with a black belt in Martial Arts.

The day after the alleged attack, the victim was able to make contact with a nonprofit organization and was advised to file a police report. The responding officer observed that the woman’s upper lip was swollen with a noticeable laceration to the inner area. She also complained of pain to her face and rib area. Shortly after speaking with the alleged victim, police arrested Persad who denied intentionally assaulting the woman.

He was later remanded to the Golden Grove Correctional Facility. At an advisement hearing on Wednesday, a judge set his bail at $1,000, indicating that he will be released on the posting of $101 cash and the signing of an unsecured bond for the remainder. Court documents indicate that bail was posted as of Thursday.
