ST. CROIX — A 17-year-old male was found dead this afternoon in one of the Good Hope Townhouses in Frederiksted, V.I.P.D. Public Information Officer Toby Derima has announced. Police sources have confirmed the incident to be self-inflicted, although the V.I.P.D. official release says the police department was awaiting an autopsy "to determine the details of the incident."
According to Mr. Derima, on Tuesday at around 3:51 p.m., officers were notified of a gunshot victim in the Good Hope Townhouses and immediately traveled to the area to investigate. Upon arrival, the officers found a 17-year-old male with a gunshot wound. The V.I.P.D. release did not specify the area of the body where the gunshot wound was discovered.
Police did not identify the victim, falling in line with a long-held policy not to provide identifying information of suicide victims.
Correction: March 31, 2020
A previous version of this story, because of a text error, included Sunday in the second paragraph as the day the young man was found dead. That's incorrect; he was found Tuesday, March 31, 2020. The story has been updated to reflect the correct information.
