Senator Kenneth Gittens

The office of Senator Kenneth Gittens said Monday that he was discharged from Juan F. Luis Hospital over the weekend and will continue his recuperation and treatment as an outpatient. Mr. Gittens's office did not give an exact date that the senator was released. An outpatient is a patient who receives medical care without being admitted to a hospital.

“I can never say thank you enough for all the concern and love shown to me this past week,” he said in a release. “I am sorry that I was unable to respond to every message. However, all the well wishes and prayers were deeply appreciated and were what lifted me up through this very difficult experience. I look forward to a full recovery and resuming my duties as soon as I can.”

Speaking to the Consortium the night he was hospitalized on Oct. 30, Mr. Gittens confirmed that what he thought was gas pain were actually blood clots affecting multiple areas of his body, including a large blood clot in his lungs.

A blood clot blocks the normal flow of blood. This blockage can cause serious problems, like damage to the lungs and low oxygen levels in the human body's blood. The lack of oxygen can harm other organs in the body, too. If the clot is big or the artery is clogged by many smaller clots, a pulmonary embolism can be deadly, according to WebMD.
