The Christiansted National Historic Site, a member of the National Park Service, is inviting young adults, aged 18 and up, to apply for a rewarding and thrilling summer job opportunity as a Team Leader for the Youth Conservation Corps (YCC).

The YCC, which was established as a summer employment program, focuses on the development and conservation of the United States' natural resources while instilling a sense of environmental stewardship and civic responsibility in its participants.

Successful applicants will earn pay while working, learning, and honing their leadership skills in a unique setting. No prior experience is required; however, a passion for making a positive impact is essential.

The role involves physical work outdoors, often in temperatures exceeding 85°F. Participants may encounter insects, prickly plants, and inclement weather. Projects may include debris removal, brush clearing, trail construction, painting, tree pruning, weed control, and erosion control efforts.

Moreover, the park will enrich participants' experiences through environmental education, field trips, and exposure to a wide range of Park Service career opportunities. These include Facilities and Maintenance, Administration, Resource Management (in areas such as Biology, History, Anthropology, and Museums Collections), Interpretation, and Law Enforcement experiences.

The YCC session at Christiansted National Historic Site is set to run from June 8 to July 28, 2023.

Applicants interested in the YCC Team Leader position should submit a cover letter, a resume, and the contact information for three references by May 26, 2023. Applications submitted after this deadline will not be considered. All submitted documents should include the applicant's last name and the document type in the file name. Applications are preferably sent via email to [email protected] with the position title in the subject line, but in-person submissions are also accepted.

The job involves a 40-hour work week, from Monday through Friday, with an hourly pay rate of $13. In addition to the base pay, participants are eligible for academic scholarships and Public Land Crop (PLC) hours, which can be applied towards future employment opportunities. Applicants must be available for work from 7:00 a.m. until 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, starting June 8th and ending on July 28th, with no unexcused absences or vacations.

To qualify, applicants must be permanent residents of the United States, possess a Social Security card, demonstrate a willingness to work outdoors, have no serious criminal or anti-social history, and be capable of working effectively in a team. Parental or guardian consent is required for teen workers, who must also be able to provide appropriate work attire, such as jeans and work boots.

For more information about the position or the application process, interested individuals can contact YCC Program Supervisor Angelita Alvino at (340) 773-1460 or via email at [email protected].
