ST. THOMAS — Virgin Islands Fire Service (V.I.F.S.) personnel from the Lima Company Fire Station on Thursday at about 4:11 p.m., responded to a structural fire at Unit 225 of the Barbados Building at the Sapphire Beach Resort, V.I.F.S. announced this afternoon.

Fire personnel who arrived on the scene first found the first floor of the three-story structure fully engulfed in flames, and moved to commence fire suppression operations. Additional units from Hotel, Echo and Tango Companies were ordered to the scene, according to V.I.F.S. Fire personnel fought the fire for over two hours before extinguishing it completely.  They then conducted salvage and overhaul operations, extinguishing hotspots as they were discovered.

The condominium sustained significant smoke and fire damage. Adjacent condominiums on the lower level also sustained significant smoke damage, according to the release.

At 7:36 a.m. on Friday fire personnel from the Hotel Company Fire Station responded to another structural fire at 11A Norre Gade.  Once on the scene, firefighters located the fire on the first floor of the three-story residential structure and began firefighting operations.  The fire was quickly contained to the porch of the first floor apartment and extinguished. Salvage and overhaul operations were then conducted.

Both fires are presently under investigation by the St. Thomas/ St. John Arson Investigation and Prevention Unit, according to the V.I.F.S. release.
