ST. CROIX — One of the stolen lowboys reported missing from a site near the Container Port on St. Croix has been found and returned — but questions remain, as the tractor head used to deliver it is still unaccounted for.

The equipment was discovered late Monday night in a field at the base of the hill heading toward La Reine in Clifton Hill. The Consortium was tipped off about the lowboy’s location and traveled to the scene to confirm its presence. Marian Prescod, the owner of the construction company contracted for demolition work at the Charles Harwood Memorial Hospital, verified that the lowboy matched the one captured in surveillance video at the time of the theft.

“Yes, it is ours,” Prescod said. “It’s 100 percent the same lowboy.”

However, the return was partial at best. The tractor head — the vehicle seen towing the lowboy in previously reviewed surveillance footage — remains missing, along with another tractor head, two dump trucks, and one more lowboy stolen earlier this year.

The abandoned lowboy was found sitting alone in the open, left in a field with no indication as to who placed it there. The recovery marks a small step forward in the ongoing investigation into the theft of over $400,000 worth of heavy equipment.

The return of at least one piece of equipment comes amid mounting pressure on authorities to act. The company has previously expressed frustration over the pace of the investigation, which involves the V.I. Police Department and has included reviews of streetlight camera footage — much of which has been reported as non-functional. The company has also deployed private resources, including a helicopter, to assist in the search, and has offered a six-figure reward for credible tips. As of Monday, however, the VIPD has since shifted resources toward recovering the stolen equipment, Ms. Prescod made known.

The search continues for the missing tractor head and other unrecovered assets.
