The trial of Calvert White and Benjamin Hendricks on fraud and bribery charges has been delayed until July 21. District Court Judge Mark Kearney made the decision after a conference with counsel on Tuesday.
Judge Kearney rescheduled the trial after granting a motion to continue filed by Darren John-Baptiste, attorney for Mr. Hendricks. Neither Mr. White nor the prosecutors opposed the request.
Ahead of the new trial date, discovery material not already handed over must be delivered to defendants by March 3. All pretrial motions must be submitted by May 28, with other deadlines governing jury selection procedures following, until the final pretrial conference currently set for July 16.
Calvert White, former commissioner of the Department of Sports, Parks and Recreation, and Benjamin Hendricks, a businessman and government contractor, are accused of colluding to accept bribes from disgraced businessman David Whitaker, himself awaiting sentencing after pleading guilty to wire fraud and bribery charges.
Mr. Whitaker is also the central figure implicating former commissioner of police Ray Martinez and former director of the Office of Management and Budget Jenifer O'Neal, who have been jointly charged with money laundering, fraud, and bribery offenses.
