ST. THOMAS —Miguel Marrero will remain in custody pending trial, a district court judge has ruled.

Ahead of his scheduled appearance before U.S. Magistrate Emile Henderson III, prosecutors filed a motion requesting that Marerro remain in detention ahead of his upcoming federal trial. Attorneys argued that there is “no condition or combination of conditions that will reasonably assure the defendant’s appearance at trial and the safety of the community.”

‌The charges that Marrero now face are serious, prosecutors say. His alleged crimes involve a minor victim and the possession or use of a firearm, and there is a serious risk that the three-time convicted felon will flee if released ahead of trial.

Furthermore, with the alleged offenses captured on video, the weight of the evidence against Marrero is strong.

‌Based on these factors, Marrero poses a danger to the community, and should not be released from detention, prosecutors argued.‌

Defense attorneys did not object to the prosecutors’ request, and thus Magistrate Henderson ruled that Marrero be turned over to the U.S. Marshal Service for processing.

The incident stemmed from a confrontation following a fight between Marrero's son and the victim's daughter. Marrero allegedly fired several shots, injuring an adult female and her 15-year-old daughter. Captured on video, the shooting resulted in the adult victim undergoing emergency surgery and her daughter being treated and released. Marrero, who fled the scene, was apprehended and admitted to the shootings.
