Vessels in Virgin Islands’ waters previously limited to transporting only six passengers could soon be allowed to carry up to twelve passengers if they have cleared British MCA inspections, a statement released Wednesday on the Government House Blog has revealed.
The new regulations will come as a result of the Six Pack Amendment, which was sponsored by Bill Shuster, (R- PA) Chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee. While in Washington, D. C. this week, Governor John P. de Jongh thanked Chairman Shuster for his prime sponsorship of the bill. While the bill has been given approval by the House, it now goes to the Senate for final approval.
Governor De Jongh also lobbied for aid to help the V.I. government acquire the Coast Guard properties on the St. Thomas waterfront, as well as for increased aviation support and highway funding for both the St. Croix and St. Thomas-St. John districts. The men also discussed Chairman Shuster’s conversations with major U.S. airline carriers about expanding service to the territory.
Governor De Jongh is in the nation’s capital attending meetings with Congressional leaders on key issues affecting the territory.
