ST. THOMAS — The first of the “VI Pride: Keeping Our Island Clean” project will begin anew with major clean-up activities taking place in the historic Savan area of St. Thomas later this month.
St. Thomas and Water Island Administrator Avery Lewis, the Governor’s Office and Sen. Dwayne M. DeGraff have brought together the VI Department of Public Works and the Waste Management Authority crews to assist Savan residents to clear out roadsides, and collect trash, yard waste and bulk waste, such as appliances that are placed on the roadside.
“We are going to be in the area of Savan cleaning up from Monday, Oct. 21 through the 25. During that time we will be pick up bulk waste and will have crews there cleaning the streets,” Mr. Lewis said Monday. Crews will be out between 7:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. that Monday to Friday.
On Saturday, Oct. 26, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., there will be a community-wide cleanup event, where Savan residents and community groups may volunteer to come join the cleanup effort.
During the week, Savan residents can dispose of trash and waste from homes and properties in the large bins placed in the neighborhood.
The clean-up program was paused due to weather in recent weeks. “We are reconvening and starting again,” Mr. Lewis said.
Mr. Lewis asked that trash be placed in garbage bags. No metal will be accepted, he said.
Free T-shirts and trash bags will be available at the Romeo Malone Community Center on Saturday, Oct. 26.
The clean-up campaign will continue in other communities throughout the territory, Mr. Lewis said.
