ST. THOMAS — A passenger lost his life and two other individuals sustained non-life threatening injuries on Sunday night after the vehicle they were in, which police said was traveling at a high rate of speed, lost control while attempting to turn a corner, V.I.P.D. Public Information Officer Karl Caesar has announced.
According to Mr. Caesar, on Sunday at approximately 11:22 p.m., V.I.P.D. officers with the Traffic Bureau and forensic units responded to a 911 Emergency Call Center notification of a car crash on Brookman Road east of the laundromat area on St. Thomas’s east end.
Deputy Chief of Police David Cannonier arrived on the scene along with other members of the VIPD and observed a late model Mitsubishi Montero flipped on its roof with an occupant pinned inside. The pinned individual was pronounced dead on the scene. He was a 24-year-old black male of Haitian decent, whose identity is being withheld pending next of kin notification.
A preliminary investigation revealed that the vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed and lost control while trying to turn a corner on Brookman Road, Mr. Caesar said.
The victim was a passenger in the vehicle along with two other occupants. Police later discovered the other two occupants.
One of the occupants walked to a house in the Nadir area and the other occupant traveled to the hospital seeking treatment, according to the police report. Their injuries were not life threatening.
“It is important that we obey all traffic laws, especially when it comes to our speed limits. We need the community to come forward and assist us in avoiding and solving such incidents,” said Deputy Chief of Police David Cannonier.
