St. Croix Track And Field Club Mustangs Win Four Gold Medals In Atlanta, Break Records

News / Sports / Virgin Islands / May 28, 2019

The St. Croix Track Club (S.T.X.T.C.) Mustangs brought home four gold medals after competing at the Atlanta, Georgia Relays May 25-26. The team also broke track and field records at the event, according to information provided by the track club.

Along with the gold medals, the team brought home two silvers and one bronze. Athletes came from all over the Eastern Caribbean, including Trinidad & Tobago, Jamaica, Bahamas, BVI, Argentina, and more. Mustangs who competed were Jeniqua Weekes, Faith Eatmon, Mikaela Smith, Michelle Smith, Ariana Edgar, and Samuel Cole.

“We are quite pleased with our athletes’ achievements of numerous personal records despite Atlanta’s brutal 95 degree heat,” S.T.X.T.C. said in a release.

Michelle Smith won two golds, one in the 1500m and the other in the 800m in a time of 5min 1sec and 2min, 23sec respectively. Edgar won two golds and one bronze in the Throws. Her two gold medals came in the Shot Put and the Discus, where she putted the 8lb shot 33ft 2in (9.82m) and 106ft(32.31m) for the Discus. Both of those events’ results were record-setting performances, according to S.T.X.T.C. The Shot Put was two meters further than the old record, while the Discus was 11 meters better than the old record. Edgar also achieved bronze in the Javelin with 54ft. 7in.(16.67m). Mikaela Smith won two silvers — the 400m hurdles in 63.95sec, and the 800m in 2min 20sec.

“We are very proud of all our athletes as they continue to work hard in their classes and in Track & Field,” S.T.X.T.C. said. “We are thankful for sponsorship from VI Lottery’s Youth Enhancement Initiative and others in affording us this competition opportunity.”
