Mario Moorhead, the legendary radio personality and ubiquitously known historian in the U.S. Virgin Islands, will join VI Consortium Publisher Ernice Gilbert on the Virgin Islands Political Consortium program tonight to discuss the Reapportionment Initiative, whose fate Virgin Islanders will decide during’s Saturday’s territory-wide vote. The 1-hour interview starts at 7:00 p.m. and will be webcast live on The Consortium’s Facebook platform and its website.
Mr. Moorhead, a member of the St. Croix Government Retirees, Inc., has been one of the main figures advancing the initiative, along with Mary Moorhead, his sister.
The new arrangement, if supported by a majority of Virgin Islanders, would imitate the U.S. setup whereby at-large senators would operate like U.S. Congress senators representing the entire territory, and district senators operating more like those elected to the U.S. House of Representatives — through population and focusing on local issues.
The initiative aims to restructure the legislature from two separate legislative districts into 5 separate legislative districts. The legislature would continue to have 15 senators: 9 district senators and 6 at-large senators.
