Virgin Islands National Soccer Team Captain J.C. Mack Signs With Iceland Soccer Club Vikingur Reykjavik

News / Sports / Top Stories / Virgin Islands / January 25, 2019

Virgin Islands National Soccer Team Captain, J.C. Mack, on Thursday signed a two-year contract with Vikingur Reykjavík in the Icelandic Pepsi league, making him the highest level soccer player in Virgin Islands history, according to a release issued Friday. Mr. Mack is looking forward to bringing his experience and expertise back to the U.S. Virgin Islands, specifically for home games that will be played in the new soccer stadium on St. Croix, the release said.

On the honor of being chosen for one of the 3 spaces in each team allotted for non-European players, Mr. Mack said, “It is cold, it is wet, and the preseason quite long. You may be overlooked for quicker or cheaper options, tackles against you will be heavy, and your grit will be tested. However, scoring goals against the highest level clubs in this country has joy that you will not feel outside of Europe.”

He added, “Your ability to bring something to the game that cannot be found on the island (Iceland) is the highest respect a club can show to an artist or tradesman. This country provides such a lovely platform to express yourself. Embrace it, enjoy it, and never forget that no matter what team you play for, no one is safe when you’re in the game. Stay strong fam and enjoy your craft.”

n September 2018, Mr. Mack made his debut for the U.S. Virgin Islands national team during their loss to Canada in the CONCACAF Nations League. In addition to playing for the Virgin Islands, the 30-year-old striker has played with Selfoss and Vestra in Iceland, France’s Tourcoing, Chicago Fire, Charleston Battery, and Ekeanas SC in the United States over the course of his career. He has participated in 73 games at the Icelandic Championship and has scored 24 goals.
