Neville James Is Sent Home. He Had Stressed The Importance Of Keeping Seasoned Lawmakers In Power.

News / Politics / Virgin Islands / August 15, 2018

The Board of Elections has counted all the ballots of the 2018 primary election, and though the numbers grew, the results remained about the same.

Senator Neville James, whose fate rested in the hand of absentee ballots, was unable to overcome Oakland Benta’s small lead, which held Mr. James in the 8th place by just 7 votes with 1,461 to Mr. Benta’s 1,468.

In an interview with The Consortium before the primary, Mr. James said one of the reasons he decided to seek reelection after rumors circulated that he would not, was because he worried that with too many newcomers, some would lack the institutional know-how to be successful legislators. He’d said part of his mission moving forward was to clear a path for young leaders — whether they’re part of the Majority or Minority caucus. Mr. James said the last four years in the Senate had seen strong leadership from the St. Croix District, whose senators had been leading the Majority’s agenda — among them Mr. Vialet, Mr. Francis and Mr. James.

Elsewhere on St. Croix, Alicia Barnes maintained her first place position with 2,651 votes, followed by Allison DeGazon with 2,328 votes. Senators Novelle Francis and Kurt Vialet were tied in third place at 1,842 votes each.

On St. Thomas, Donna Frett-Gregory’s votes grew in the final count to 3,048. She was followed by Senator Marvin Blyden with 2,557 votes in second place, Athneil Thomas in third with 2,299, and Senator Myron Jackson in fourth with 2,227.

The Board of Elections will certify the results on Friday at 5:30 p.m. at the St. Thomas and St. Croix Elections System offices.
