ST. CROIX – Allison DeGazon will advance as a democratic candidate for Senate in the general elections after winning 2,282 votes and placing second among the St. Croix candidates in tonight’s primary.
The unofficial results came via the Election System of the Virgin Islands website at 9:28 p.m.
Finding out she’d gotten the opportunity to move onto the general election was a moment Ms. DeGazon described as “bittersweet,” considering her mother, Jennifer DeGazon had died the day before.
“I wish she was here to celebrate with me,” she said shortly after the results came in at the Elections System of the Virgin Islands Office in the Sunny Isle Annex. “She gave me that push, that extra boost that I needed.
Although it was a hard reality to face, Ms. DeGazon said she was thankful that the rest of her family, including her father, Leo DeGazon, was there to support her.
Should the votes come out in her favor in November, she will be a first-time senator in the 33rd legislature.
Ms. DeGazon said voters showed her tonight that they are ready for something new.
“I just believe that they’re ready for new and fresh, and they want more innovation,” she said. “When they watch other islands and other places advance while we’re stagnant…I think this was their opportunity to stand up and say, ‘No more. We need a change’.”
The St. Croix native said that her assets include the ability to research, to be resourceful and to find creative ways to generate revenue and solve problems.
Ms. DeGazon has served as the Virgin Islands Department of Labor’s Director of Unemployment Insurance and the Assistant Director of the Virgin Islands Territorial Emergency Management Agency.
She holds a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of the Virgin Islands and is currently pursuing a doctorate degree in Creative Leadership and Change as part of a pilot program at UVI. She received a full scholarship from the Virgin Island’s Academic and Cultural Awards Endowment Program for her present studies.
Ms. DeGazon was also UVI’s 13D Student Entrepreneurship Competition winner in 2014 where she was the recipient of $30,000. The 43-year-old is now the owner of Cruzan Organix Farm, Inc. and Business Strategies, Inc.
Her political platform includes the hopes “to transform agriculture into an economic cornerstone,” according to her campaign website. She also hopes to play role in bringing more federal dollars to the territory and foster the growth of local businesses.
