Summer Math Challenge Open To Students Completing Grades 1-8

The Virgin Islands Department of Education, Office of Curriculum and Instruction is encouraging parents of students who have completed grades 1-8 in the 2017-18 school year to take advantage of the Summer Math Challenge — a free online math skills maintenance program based on grade-level standards that help prepare students for college and careers.

The Summer Math Challenge runs Monday, June 18 through Friday, July 27 and is hosted by educational research group, MetaMetrics. As part of the program, parents receive daily emails with fun activities and links to educational resources.

The six-week program is designed to help students retain math skills learned during the previous school year. Research shows that on average, students lose approximately 2.6 months of gradelevel equivalency in math over the summer months.

Students attending the territory’s public, private and parochial schools may participate in the Summer Math Challenge.
