ST. CROIX — On Tuesday the Department of Health (D.O.H.) announced that services would be suspended on St. Croix at the Charles Harwood facility in Christiansted, due to power outage and lack of air conditioning. The building was also breached due to severe damage caused by Hurricanes Irma and Maria, including water infiltration throughout the facility.
The lack of power at the D.O.H. complex compounded internal infrastructural issues and as a result, D.O.H. Commissioner Michelle Davis determined that the facility was unsafe for employees and patients, the department said in a release issued late Wednesday.
Even so, D.O.H. says limited services will be provided through Friday at the Charles Harwood facility, while other sites are being assessed. Currently the following services are available at Charles Harwood, according to the department:
- Distribution of Insulin to the uninsured and under-insured from 10:00am-3:00pm. Patients are asked to bring their medicine bottle or prescription. Types of insulin that will be offered include: Humulin 70/30, Regular and NPH, and Humolog.
- The Maternal & Child Health program will be distributing infant and toddler kits from 10:00am-2:00pm. All nurses are asked to report to Charles Harwood at 8:30am.
- Community Health will be providing services for walk-ins and prescription refills.
- Family Planning clinic clients can retrieve their supplies starting tomorrow, Thursday, October 12th. Family Planning will begin clinical exams on Friday, October 13, 2017.
- All WIC clients can redeem their September and October checks at their respective clinics (Christiansted/Frederiksted). September checks have been extended and are valid until October 31st.
- Clients of the VI Partners for Healthy Communities will also provide services for their clients beginning tomorrow, Thursday, October 12th.
