When TS Entertainment’s founder, Ayinde Gomez, started his back to school giveaway effort in 2016, he said the idea was to make the event bigger and better each year. This year, the territory’s largest internet and cable TV provider, Viya, known for its incessant community giveback initiatives, joined Mr. Gomez as a major sponsor, helping the veteran promoter better realize his vision.
The event was held at the Barren Spot Mall on Saturday.
Three hundred bags with school supplies in them were given to lucky children on a first-come first-serve basis. Two fully loaded laptops were raffled for free; free ice cream and free haircuts were all part of the event, according to Viya’s Rebecca Waterfall. Also on hand were organizations such as Inner Changes for Girls and Boys Council with after-school program discounts, as well as the Governor’s Reading Challenge with books to giveaway.
Parents and their children crammed the mall for a chance to get a free item for their children. But judging from the overwhelming turnout, there were most likely a number of children who left without a bag.
