ST. CROIX — As Governor Kenneth Mapp filed his personal tax return late Tuesday morning at the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) offices on St. Croix, he reminded all residents to avoid penalties by filing a return or request for extension by this evening, Government House has announced.
During his visit to BIR, the governor greeted those filing and thanked employees for their hard work during this busy time of year.
BIR Director Marvin Pickering recently announced extended hours for the convenience of taxpayers based on the following schedule:
On St. Croix, at the Bureau’s office, the extended office hours are as follows:
Tuesday, April 18 – 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.
On St. Thomas, the extended hours and locations are as follows:
Red Hook Tuesday, April 18 – 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.
Nisky Center Tuesday, April 18 – 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.
On St. John, the office remains open until 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 18 to accommodate taxpayers.
Taxpayers who are unable to file their 2016 returns by the April 18 due date are reminded that they can file an extension by using Form 4868. To obtain approval of the extension, the taxpayer must properly estimate the tax liability due and file the Form 4868 no later than April 18. The extension is only for the filing of the tax return. Taxpayers who owe taxes must pay the tax due on April 18 to avoid the failure to pay penalty.
