Man Arrested, Jailed For Delivering Worthless Checks

Business / Crime / News / Virgin Islands / October 11, 2016

ST. CROIX — Police arrested a man on Monday and charged him with fraud after he allegedly delivered worthless checks in an attempt to attain real property, V.I.P.D. Public Information Officer Glen Dratte announced via press release.

According to Mr. Dratte, citing a police report, the suspect, Ted Williams (seen here), signed an agreement with a real estate company to purchase property, and wrote checks in July 2015 for $200, 000; September 2015 for $350,000; and May 2016 for $400,000.

The realtor deposited the checks into her account and each time was informed by the bank that funds were insufficient. An investigation by detectives of the Economic Crime Unit (E.C.U.) revealed that Mr. Williams never had the funds available in the account.

Following these developments, Mr. Williams was placed under arrest by E.C.U. He was then taken to the V.I.P.D.’s Rainbow Building in Frederiksted, where he was booked and charged.

Unable to make bail of $75,000, Mr. Williams was remanded to the Golden Grove Detention Center pending his advise-of-rights hearing.
