Territory’s Students Compete For Junior Tourism Commissioner

Entertainment / Lifestyle / News / Virgin Islands / August 14, 2015

ST. THOMAS — The Department of Tourism will host the annual Inter-Island Junior Tourism Commissioner Competition here on Friday, according to a press release DOT issued on Thursday.

The event will be held at 10:30 a.m. at the Department of Tourism Welcome Center on Kronprindsens Gade. The winner will be named Junior Tourism Commissioner for 2015/2016 and will join Beverly Nicholson-Doty, commissioner of tourism, at the Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO) State of the Industry Conference in Curacao this October to present at a Caribbean-wide competition with other students from around the region.

The Junior Tourism Commissioner Competition was developed by the CTO to introduce Caribbean students to the fundamental role of tourism in the economic development of their countries.

“We are delighted to offer this program once again in the U.S. Virgin Islands, providing our students with a forum to express their views on tourism-related issues,” Nicholson-Doty said. “Since tourism will remain the main economic engine for our islands in the foreseeable future, it’s important to provide opportunities where students, our future business and community leaders, can develop a greater understanding and appreciation of the tourism industry.”

Representing St. Croix is Tywreh Nelson of the St. Croix Educational Complex. Jonisha Aubain from Charlotte Amalie High School will represent this island.

I wear many hats, I suppose, but the one which fits me best would be journalism, second to that would be radio personality, thirdly singer/songwriter and down the line. I've been the Editor-In-Chief at my videogames website, Gamesthirst, for over 5 years, writing over 7,000 articles and more than 2 million words. I'm also very passionate about where I live, the United States Virgin Islands, and I'm intent on making it a better place by being resourceful and keeping our leaders honest. VI Consortium was birthed out of said desire, hopefully my efforts bear fruit. Reach me at [email protected].
