Katherine Callwood Is Miss UVI 2015-2016

Entertainment / Featured / News / Virgin Islands / April 14, 2015

ST. CROIX — Katherine Callwood was crowned Miss University of the Virgin Islands 2015-2016 at the 35th Annual Miss UVI Ambassadorial Competition held Saturday, April 11, on the Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix.

Thalia George, 21, was the first runner-up and Olinger Augustin, 23, came in third.

“I feel very humbled and very honored that the judges thought I was the person for the job. My team and I did a great job of working hard and persevering,” Callwood said.

Apart from winning the crown, Callwood, 26, won Most Eloquent/Intellectual Speaker, Best Evening Wear and Miss Photogenic. She will receive a full-year UVI scholarship, which includes tuition, room and board. She also received other prizes.

Callwood, a sophomore majoring in early childhood education, said she took part in the competition because her goals are very similar to UVI’s. Said goals include promoting education, excellent teaching and community service. Callwood, who attends UVI on the St. Thomas Campus, plans to be the director of her own early education school, which will serve low-income and special needs children. As Miss UVI, Callwood hopes to network and implement strategies that promote UVI and education.

Callwood succeeded Miss UVI 2014-2015 Elisa Thomas and thanked “Team Katherine” for assistance in her victory on Saturday.

Taking home Best Business Wear, Best Ambassadorial Presentation and Miss Congeniality was George. Augustin was named Miss Popularity.

The Miss UVI Ambassadorial Competition is sponsored by the Student Government Association Queen’s Committee. The competition serves as a goodwill ambassador for the higher learning institution. Some of Miss UVI’s roles include participation in UVI’s recruitment efforts, representing the university locally and abroad, and maintaining a highly visible role on the institution’s campuses on St. Thomas and St. Croix.

One of Callwood’s first duties will be to represent UVI in the St.Thomas Carnival 2015 Adult’s Parade on Saturday, May 2.

I wear many hats, I suppose, but the one which fits me best would be journalism, second to that would be radio personality, thirdly singer/songwriter and down the line. I've been the Editor-In-Chief at my videogames website, Gamesthirst, for over 5 years, writing over 7,000 articles and more than 2 million words. I'm also very passionate about where I live, the United States Virgin Islands, and I'm intent on making it a better place by being resourceful and keeping our leaders honest. VI Consortium was birthed out of said desire, hopefully my efforts bear fruit. Reach me at [email protected].
