Public Works Commissioner In Washington Today To Discuss Territory’s Transportation Priorities

Darryl Smalls, Commissioner of the Department of Public Works (DPW), is meeting with high-level officials of the U.S. Department of Transportation in Washington, D.C. today to hold discussions regarding the Virgin Islands transportation priorities. The discussions will highlight future and current projects using federal funds, the agreement between the federal department and the territory, and other pertinent issues.

“Overall, the DOT meetings are intended to ensure that we are part of any discussion taking place with respect to transportation programs and funding opportunities while updating them on various ongoing infrastructure developments. We have worked together on a number of successful projects that have improved roads, drainage systems, and other public works across the territory,” Commissioner Smalls said.

Smalls will also meet with representatives of Eastern Federal Lands Highway Division to discuss topics ranging from the Veteran’s Drive Project Agreement and the status of the Melvin Evans Highway project, as well as the bonding or financing of projects. The commissioner’s busy schedule also includes meetings with officials of the Office of Infrastructure and Governmental Affairs.

Smalls final meeting of the day will be with Deputy Assistant Secretary for Transportation Policy in the Office of the Secretary of Transportation, where the discussions will be focused on the “Build America Transportation Investment Center”. The center was launched by President Barack Obama in July, 2014 as part of his wider initiative to rebuild the nation’s infrastructure, hence creating jobs and expanding opportunities for individuals and businesses.

The center is housed within the U.S. Department of Transportation, and serves as a “one-stop shop for state and local governments, public and private developers and investors seeking to utilize innovative financing strategies for transportation infrastructure projects,” according to the White House.

Upon returning to the territory at week’s end, Smalls will report to Governor John P. de Jongh, giving an update on any progress made on transportation and infrastructure matters.
