Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico Under Flash Flood Warning Until Late Friday Night [UPDATE]

News / Virgin Islands / November 7, 2014

[UPDATE 1]

The Virgin Islands Department of Education has confirmed that all public schools are open on Friday, Nov. 7.

Original Story

The U. S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico are currently under flash flood warning from Friday morning through late Friday night, and residents are being asked to take precautions as they travel today.

The warning was issued by the National Weather Service in San Juan, revealing that a weak tropical wave, loaded with moisture, is interacting with a strong upper-level low to bring heavy rains across the region, totaling six inches in some areas. The report said the continued thunderstorms could bring heavy flooding, and instructions were given to aid residents in their preparedness efforts.

As a result of the heavy rainfall, residents are asked to avoid low-lying areas and to take precaution when approaching highway dips. The Weather Service said the heavy rain could also cause mudslides, especially in areas where residents live on hills surrounded by muddy land.

At press time, there was no public information issued regarding school or government-offices closures.

The VI Consortium will continue to monitor the system and provide updates as they become available.

I wear many hats, I suppose, but the one which fits me best would be journalism, second to that would be radio personality, thirdly singer/songwriter and down the line. I've been the Editor-In-Chief at my videogames website, Gamesthirst, for over 5 years, writing over 7,000 articles and more than 2 million words. I'm also very passionate about where I live, the United States Virgin Islands, and I'm intent on making it a better place by being resourceful and keeping our leaders honest. VI Consortium was birthed out of said desire, hopefully my efforts bear fruit. Reach me at [email protected].
