UPDATE: Supervisor of Elections Caroline Fawkes has just told VI Consortium that the latest numbers released by the Elections System were erroneous, and she has directed the technician to take it down. Fawkes added that a press release will be sent out acknowledging the error.

ORIGINAL STORY: The VI 2014 gubernatorial race has ended without a winner, as neither of the five candidates running for the seat managed to win a high enough percentage of the votes to claim victory. To win a gubernatorial election in the U.S. Virgin Islands, a team must capture 50 percent plus one more vote.

None of the candidates were able to capture the required amount, with the Mapp-Potter team receiving the highest percentage at 48.79 percent with 37 of 37 precincts reported, according to the latest numbers from the Elections System of the Virgin Islands. Christensen-Ottley at 36.18 percent, Coffelt-Canegata at 7.94 percent, Barnes-Coram at 6.70 percent and Scullion-Quinn with 0.27 percent.

Virgin Islands law permits two weeks after the General Election for a runoff to be held, so expect rigorous campaigning from the Christesen and Mapp camps from today until the new election date, November 18.

In a recent interview with VI Consortium, Mapp warned his supporters to get ready for a runoff.

“I have been admonishing my folks to be prepared for a runoff — there’s some debate about that, but being realistic, we’re looking at that, and we’re just excited. It’s going to be a great time of opportunity, and the community continues to support us and give us what appears to be a successful effort” Mapp said.

Mapp added that he would make available 1,000 jobs upon being elected governor, something he says is achievable by cutting off overtime pay and using that money to employ more people.

Christensen, in an earlier interview, told VI Consortium that she was the only one with the right connections to bring new opportunity to the Virgin Islands, because of the strong relationships she has built over the years in Washington.
