The National Weather Service in San Juan has issued a weather alert predicting unsettled and wet conditions starting Wednesday for Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.

According to forecasts, a combination of an upper-level trough and a developing surface low-pressure system will bring significant moisture to the region, heightening the risk of flooding later in the week.

The anticipated weather pattern involves multiple episodes of rain, with the initial bout expected to hit the islands on Wednesday. This initial pulse will see showers moving from the Caribbean Sea into the Virgin Islands and spreading across the southern and eastern parts of Puerto Rico. A subsequent pulse of rain is forecasted for Thursday, with residual effects likely lingering into Friday.

Meteorologists have warned that prolonged periods of moderate to heavy rainfall could lead to heightened risks of river overflows, flash floods, and mudslides. The weather service advises residents and visitors, especially those in flood-prone areas, to stay alert to weather updates and be prepared for rapidly changing conditions.

The moisture associated with this weather system is expected to persist through at least late Saturday, maintaining elevated risks throughout the period.
