The 15-year-old male accused in the June 5 fatal shooting of 38-year-old Jordan “Dutty Heart” Jones has officially been transferred to adult court, according to an announcement by V.I. Attorney General Gordon C. Rhea.
Following a transfer hearing on Tuesday, the court ordered that the minor be charged as an adult. The adult arrest warrant and formal charging documents were executed shortly after the decision was rendered.
The charges stem from a broad daylight shooting that occurred near the Christiansted Boardwalk around 12:52 p.m. on June 5. According to reports made to the 911 Emergency Call Center, two men were shot during the incident. Jones sustained multiple gunshot wounds and later died at the Juan F. Luis Hospital. A bystander who attempted to assist Jones was grazed by a bullet but was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
Investigators from the V.I. Police Department reviewed surveillance footage and interviewed witnesses, leading to the minor’s arrest the same day. The suspect was advised of his rights in Family Court on June 6, and formally arraigned on June 11 in V.I. Superior Court on St. Croix.
The V.I. Department of Justice subsequently filed a motion to have the case transferred to adult court, which the judge granted. The minor now faces a slate of serious charges, including two counts of first-degree murder, two counts of third-degree assault, one count of first-degree assault, reckless endangerment, first-degree robbery, unauthorized possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime, and possession of ammunition.
The case is being closely watched by the public and law enforcement, as it marks one of the territory’s most high-profile transfers of a juvenile suspect to adult jurisdiction in a homicide matter.
