For the second time this year, the Schneider Regional Medical Center has announced a cybersecurity incident which is affecting the public's ability to access medical and billing records. 

On Tuesday, SRMC said that it was responding to an incident “involving the detection of malware within its network on Sunday, December 1, 2024.” The nature of the malware – virus, spyware, ransomware or otherwise – was not disclosed. 

The hospital says that it had “engaged leading cybersecurity experts and partnered with federal agencies” to address the issue. “A comprehensive investigation and system assessment are underway to strengthen the network and prevent future incidents,” SRMC promised, much as it had in July, when it was the victim of a ransomware attack that left systems crippled. 

Following July's attack, CEO Tina Commissiong had said that SRMC's network had been “rebuilt using best practices,” which now appear to have been insufficient to prevent further compromise of the facility's computer systems. 

Again, SRMC claims that there is “no evidence that patient or sensitive information has been compromised.” The facility has not yet issued a firm determination of whether or not patient information was compromised during the last breach of its systems. 

Schneider Regional advises the public that patient portal access will be disrupted as they complete a thorough system scan and assessment. Printed copies of medical records, financial information and other records are also unavailable. Updates have been promised when additional information becomes available.
