The V.I Waste Management Authority’s moratorium on citations and fines for businesses violating solid waste laws is over.

In June, VIWMA agreed to pause the issuance of citations territory wide after small business owners in Christiansted complained that they had been unaware of Title 19, Section 1563 of the V.I. Code, which mandates that businesses either dispose of their waste at the Anguilla Landfill themselves, or hire a designated business trash hauler.‌

During the moratorium, the agency embarked on a public information campaign. During a radio appearance on Saturday, VIWMA Communications Director Lorna Nichols-Minkoff said that initiative is well underway. “We went to most of the businesses. We've had some tutorials, some learning things. We placed some things in the paper,” she told WSTA’s George Silcott Jr. “We're going to be going into a lot more, let's say schooling, education, on that with the public."

Additionally, WMA officials will make themselves available around the clock to answer questions and respond to concerns from the community, according to Ms. Nichols-Minkoff. “Call us up at midnight or whatever is going on, you know, whatever is happening, because we'll be there to take those calls,” she said.
