The V.I. Dept. of Licensing and Consumer Affairs on Thursday issued a reminder to the territory's business owners about the legal restrictions on alcohol sales on Good Friday. Under Title 1 VIC, Chapter 11, Subsection 171(b), serving distilled spirits in public places is prohibited from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM on this day, said Nathalie Hodge, DLCA commissioner.

The law specifies that distilled liquor, which includes high-alcohol content spirits such as brandy, whiskey, rum, gin, and vodka, cannot be served in bars, restaurants, and other public venues during these hours. Notably, the restriction does not apply to fermented beverages like beer, wine, and cider, which have a lower alcohol content, typically under 15%. Additionally, the sale of local favorites such as Pina Coladas, Coquito, and Guavaberry remains unrestricted.

Violators of this regulation face penalties of up to $200 in fines, imprisonment for no more than a year, or both. Ms.Hodge emphasized the importance of adherence to these regulations and encourage the public to report any establishments they observe breaking this law. Reports can be made to the DLCA offices in St. Croix, St. Thomas, and St. John, or directly to the DLCA Scam Line.
