Board of Elections to Hold Emergency Meeting Monday

News / Politics / Virgin Islands / September 12, 2014

On Monday, the Board of Elections, St. Croix District, will hold an emergency meeting to discuss recent developments stemming from a flurry of political and legal wrangling over the last two weeks concerning Sen. Alicia “Chucky” Hansen’s ability to run for re-election in the upcoming General Election.

In a brief press release issued late today, former senator and current chairman of the Board of Elections, Adelbert Bryan, announced the meeting will take place on Sept. 15 at the St. Croix office of the Elections System, #93AB Sunny Isles Annex at 5 p.m.

The meeting’s agenda was attached and listed “Apparent changes in Ballot by Supervisor Caroline Fawkes” as the first point of discussion under its New Business. The meeting is open to the public.

Timeline

A marathon legal battle was waged by Hansen’s lawyers when, on Aug. 28, the veteran senator’s name was removed from the November 4 ballot, by Supreme Court order, due to her past convictions of the failure to file taxes. Just 72 hours later, on Aug. 31, Gov. John de Jongh pardoned Hansen of her crimes, with the intent of clearing the way for her name to be returned to the ballot. On Sept. 9, Hansen’s legal team filed suit against Elections Supervisor Caroline Fawkes for her refusal to return the senator’s name to the ballot. Today, VI District Court Chief Justice Wilma Lewis ordered Fawkes to return Hansen’s name to the November 4 ballot.
