ST. CROIX — Two 525-foot cargo ships can now berth simultaneously at the Wilfred “Bomba” Allick Port and Transshipment Center (commonly referred to as The Containerport) at Krause Lagoon, St. Croix, the Port Authority has announced.
The increased berthing capacity at the port is made possible by the new 100-ton bollard that the Virgin Islands Port Authority has added to the pier. A bollard is a short, thick post installed on the wharf to which a ship’s rope is secured.
VIPA previously could only accommodate one 525-foot cargo ship at the Containerport at a time.
“The increased capacity will allow us to import more cargo to St. Croix. This will improve operations for local businesses, contractors and allow suppliers to provide more goods to consumers. This is significant to our economy and the quality of life enjoyed by our residents,” said VIPA Executive Director Carlton Dowe.
The bollard was installed by Eleven Construction and cost $203,400.
