Coffelt/Canegata Number 1 On Ballot As Candidates Cast Lots For General Election

News / Politics / Virgin Islands / August 22, 2014

Gubernatorial candidates, along with senate hopefuls and those vying for seats on various government boards for the November 4th General Election, cast their lots on Thursday in the St. Thomas-St. John District.

“Number one!” Soraya Diase Coffelt proclaimed, realizing that she had just won the number position on the November 4th ballot. It’s a sweet victory for the Judge who has been entangled in a bitter fight for her candidacy against the Elections Supervisor Caroline Fawkes, who sought to disqualify her bid because Judge Coffelt is not affiliated with any party and John Canegata, Coffelt’s running mate, is a registered Republican.

On August 1st, The 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals granted an injunction against removing the Coffelt/Canegata ticket from the territory’s General Election.

Coffelt and Canegata are appealing a ruling from Chief District Judge Wilma Lewis, who upheld the decision made by Elections Supervisor Caroline Fawkes in May to eliminate the team from the ballot.

“We’re waiting for an opinion,” Coffelt said. She added that until the opinion is given, she will be waging a campaign in line with the other candidates.

The Delegate to Congress race with Democrat Stacey Plaskett and Republican Vince Danet saw Attorney Plaskett winning the number spot on the ballot, retaining the same position she held in the primaries.

I wear many hats, I suppose, but the one which fits me best would be journalism, second to that would be radio personality, thirdly singer/songwriter and down the line. I've been the Editor-In-Chief at my videogames website, Gamesthirst, for over 5 years, writing over 7,000 articles and more than 2 million words. I'm also very passionate about where I live, the United States Virgin Islands, and I'm intent on making it a better place by being resourceful and keeping our leaders honest. VI Consortium was birthed out of said desire, hopefully my efforts bear fruit. Reach me at [email protected].
