St. Croix Summer Programs Not Affected By Landfill Fire, D.O.E. Says

The Department of Education on Sunday informed parents of students slated to attend summer programs on Monday, July 1 that all school-based programs will operate as scheduled in the wake of the Anguilla Landfill fire that occurred Sunday morning.

According to emergency personnel in a joint press conference on Sunday evening, the fire posed no immediate threat to public health.

The Department of Education said it will provide updates should there be changes that may affect the safety of students and school personnel.

STEAM Across the Curriculum Summer Academy

Open to elementary students in grades 1-6, this five-week program is separated into two sessions daily: Session 1 focuses on academic tutorial and interventions, primarily in reading and mathematics. Session 2 allows students to participate in interest-based activities, including coding, gardening, STEM, arts, and more.

School Sites: Juanita Gardine, Pearl B. Larsen, Claude O. Markoe and Alfredo Andrews

Start Date: July 1

Summer Bridge Academy

Open to students entering Kindergarten, 7th and 9th grades, this program provides attendees with English Language Arts, mathematical, and organizational skills needed to reduce retention and succeed academically. 

KG School Sites: Juanita Gardine, Pearl B. Larsen, Ricardo Richards, Claude O. Markoe and Alfredo Andrews 

7th Grade School Sites: John H. Woodson and Arthur A. Richards

9th Grade School Sites: Central High School and St. Croix Educational Complex 

Start Date: July 1

Recovering Academics through Credit Recovery

This program focuses on providing secondary students in grades 7-12 who are in danger of being retained with the opportunity to ‘recover’ credits needed for promotion/graduation. 

School Sites: John H. Woodson, Elena L. Christian, Arthur A. Richards, Central High School, and St. Croix Educational Complex
