ST. CROIX — The John H. Woodson student who was struck by an SUV on May 6 on the grounds of the Alfredo Andrews Elementary School, has died in Puerto Rico, police have confirmed. A family member also acknowledged the young man’s passing, which occurred Thursday evening.

He was identified and Brendel William.

He had sustained a hole in one of his lungs following the accident. Initially thought to be recovering, he had to be put back on a machine for surgery, but he did not survive, according to police.

V.I.P.D. Public Information Officer Glen Dratte said that on Monday, May 6 at about 3:14 p.m., a male driver traveling in a black SUV on the Mon Bijou road made a left turn to traverse onto the Alfredo Andrews School road, struck another vehicle, veered left and struck a 14-year-old boy who was walking on the grassy area in front of the school headed home to a nearby housing community. The vehicle then proceeded onto the school grounds, Mr. Dratte said.

The boy, a student of the Woodson Junior High School, sustained internal injury and was airlifted to San Juan, Puerto Rico for treatment, where he was in critical condition receiving emergency care until his death Thursday.

The V.I.P.D.’s Traffic Investigations Bureau is investigating the incident.

Police are also asking anyone with information about the incident to contact T.I.B. at 30-778-2211.
