John H. Woodson Student Struck By SUV Near Alfredo Andrews Is In Critical Condition In Puerto Rico Hospital

News / Virgin Islands / May 7, 2019

ST. CROIX — A boy attending the John H. Woodson Junior School is said to be in critical condition in a Puerto Rico hospital after being struck by a black SUV on Monday afternoon on the school grounds of the Alfredo Andrews Elementary School, in what the V.I.P.D. is describing as an accident.

V.I.P.D. Public Information Officer Glen Dratte said that on Monday at about 3:14 p.m., a male driver traveling in a black SUV on the Mon Bijou road made a left turn to traverse onto the Alfredo Andrews School road, struck another vehicle, veered left and struck a 14-year-old boy who was walking on the grassy area in front of the school headed home to a nearby housing community. The vehicle then proceeded onto the school grounds, Mr. Dratte said.

The boy, a student of the Woodson Junior High School, sustained internal injury and was airlifted to San Juan, Puerto Rico for treatment. Mr. Dratte said the 14-year-old was in critical condition as of Tuesday afternoon.

The V.I.P.D.’s Traffic Investigations Bureau is investigating the incident.

Police are also asking anyone with information about the incident to contact T.I.B. at 30-778-2211.

Correction: May 7, 2019

A previous version of this story stated that the boy attends the Alfredo Andrews Elementary School. However, according to family members, he attends the John H.
