The St. Croix abattoir has reopened, and the Department of Agriculture (D.O.A.) has furnished a calendar showing the animal slaughtering house’s schedule for the remainder of April: only six days are left for livestock farmers to take their animals to the St. Croix abattoir:
- Monday, April 15: Cattle, sheep, goat
- Tuesday, April 16: Pigs
- Tuesday, April 23: Cattle, sheep, goat
- Monday, April 29: Cattle, sheep, goat
- Tuesday, April 30: Pigs
D.O.A. said it would announce collection and shipment dates for livestock farmers and others in the St. Thomas-St. John District, who may require slaughtering. Livestock farmers are required to pay the slaughter bill before shipping animals, D.O.A. said.
The St. Croix abattoir, the only operational slaughter house in the territory, had been down for almost a month. D.O.A. Commissioner Nominee Positive Nelson, told The Consortium on March 19 that the issue was WAPA’s to fix. He said rusted water was running through the abattoir’s pipes, making for unsanitary conditions. On St. Thomas, the situation is worse, with Mr. Nelson stating that Hurricanes Irma and Maria had badly damaged the facility, and that a lot of work was needed there before the abattoir could be operational again.
Mulch distribution on St. Thomas
D.O.A. will be distributing bagged mulch donated by Arthur Joseph of 3G Consulting. There is a four-bag limit per individual.
The mulch is available in St. Thomas at Estates Dorothea and Bordeaux, and the Addelita Cancryn School. Interested parties must be able to load their buckets or trucks.
