Seaborne Seaplane Docks Safely On St. Croix Following Emergency Landing; All Aboard Safe

Breaking News / Featured / News / Travel / Virgin Islands / December 19, 2018

ST. CROIX — A Seaborne Airlines seaplane that left St. Thomas for St. Croix this afternoon landed safely on St. Croix after pilots identified a technical issue with the plane, Seaborne Airlines told The Consortium in a statement late Wednesday.

“This afternoon, as Seaborne Airlines flight #174 traveling from St. Thomas to St. Croix was approaching St. Croix, the crew received indication of a possible technical issue and following proper and standard safety procedures, conducted a safe landing in St. Croix without incident,” Seaborne said in the statement.

On the phone, a Seaborne representative said the plane had landed on sea in St. Croix after one of the plane’s two engines failed, and that it was guided to safety by a boat. Silver Airways Director of Communications Misty Stoller said the company was in the process of confirming more details. Silver Airways purchased Seaborne Airlines earlier this year.

The flight left St. Thomas sometime in the afternoon, and was said to include a number of V.I.P.D. personnel, among others. Seaborne said 11 passengers were on the flight, along with two pilots.

Earlier today, Seaborne said it was making a significant investment and commitment to the Caribbean and U.S. Virgin Islands by adding over 240 percent more capacity, including up to 29 more weekly departures, which is nearly 1,000 additional seats. The airline also said it would be adding a second seaplane to its operation.

According to the release, the following Seaborne routes increase from twice daily to three times daily on December 20, 2018:

  • San Juan’s Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU) – St. Thomas Cyril E. King Airport (STT)
  • San Juan’s Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU) – St. Croix Harry E. Rohlsen Airport (STX)
  • St. Thomas Cyril E. King Airport (STT) – St. Croix Harry E. Rohlsen Airport (STX)

On January 8, 2019, Seaborne’s service between San Juan (SJU) and St. Croix (STX) increases from three to five daily flights.
