Sixth Annual ‘Shop With A Cop’ Brightens Christmas For 89 Kids

ST. CROIX — The sixth annual Shop with a Cop event, organized by the Bureau of Corrections in conjunction with a number of law enforcement arms, was a heartwarming success. Held at Kmart West on Sunday afternoon, the event started with a parade of first responder vehicles that began at the University of the Virgin Islands. The children rode with the first responders and were dropped off at Kmart, where a number of individuals, along with Santa, greeted them with roaring cheers.

Once inside, the children were taken to the cafeteria, where they were peered with volunteer officers who took them shopping in the store.

Each child had $100 to spend. Prohibited items were anything that resembled a knife and gun. Children were chosen from four schools this year: The Alfredo Andrews Elementary School, the Eulalie Rivera Elementary School, the Lew Muckle Elementary School, and the Alexander Hamilton Elementary School. Children are chosen through a process that involves school monitors and counselors, whose job is to identify kids from struggling homes and recommend them to the Shop with a Cop Committee.
