Community Center / News / Virgin Islands / October 18, 2018

ST. THOMAS — The Salvation Army St Thomas Corps and the Virgin Islands Department of Sports Parks and Recreation have formed a partnership to provide the TSA After-School Program to our island youth, according to a release issued Thursday.

The TSA After-school Program will be from Monday – Friday 3:00pm – 6:00pm at the Winston Raymo Recreation Center for youth ages 5 to 18 years of age starting Monday, October 22, 2018 The TSA After-school Program will offer arts and crafts, sports and recreation, assist with homework, mentoring and music and community hours for high school students who would like to volunteer, the release said. Healthy snacks will also be provided.

Major Steven K. Pearl, Sr., The Salvation Army Regional Coordinator for the Virgin Islands said, “We are excited about this public-private partnership to bring worthwhile after-school programs targeted to at-risk children, as well as youth that otherwise may not have had opportunity to learn music or participate in sports.”

The Salvation Army received a grant from the AT&T Foundation to help fund the program. “As an island community recovering from last year’s hurricanes, we are beyond thrilled to connect with AT&T on this wonderful initiative,” said Major Hermas Pearl, the Regional Coordinator for The Salvation Army. “The Salvation Army is proud to offer this program to St. Thomas families as an affordable, safe and fun option for after-school activities.”

“The department is always looking for new and innovative ways to provide service to the community, “said Calvert White, Assistant Commissioner of the Department of Sports Parks and Recreation. “When the Salvation Army approached us with this After School Program, we realized it was a win-win situation. In addition to their (TSA) helping with education, there’s also a strong cultural component that will be part of the children’s planned activities. As the Assistant Commissioner, I’m very excited with this program and we’re ready for it to start.”

The Winston Raymo Recreation Center will be open for registration in the After-School Program, October 15-19, 2018 from 3:00-6:00PM daily. Parents and guardians may register their children for this awesome program. Our TSA staff is excited to bring this opportunity for our island youth.
