American Red Cross Urges Everyone To Prepare For Hurricane Season

Hurricane Season / News / Virgin Islands / Weather / July 8, 2018

Planning and preparing can make a big difference in safety and resiliency in the wake of a hurricane or tropical storm, the American Red Cross in the U.S. Virgin Islands said Saturday. The ability to quickly recover requires a focus on preparedness, advance planning, and knowing what to do in the event of a hurricane or tropical storm. Because of this, Red Cross of the Virgin Islands is encouraging all families to build an emergency kit in their homes.

The emergency kit should be stocked with 2-week supply for home and it should be verified twice a year. Some of the items you should include are:

  • A gallon of water per person, per day,
  • Non-perishable food
  • A flashlight
  • Battery-powered radio
  • First aid kit
  • Medications
  • Supplies for an infant if applicable
  • A multi-purpose tool
  • Personal hygiene items
  • Copies of important papers
  • Cell phone chargers
  • Extra cash
  • Blankets
  • Maps of the area
  • Emergency contact information

Families should also make a disaster plan and be informed about how local authorities will notify the public during a disaster, whether through local media or NOAA Weather Radio stations or channels. Residents are also encouraged to download the free Red Cross Emergency App to have real-time information about the storm, shelter locations and hurricane safety tips at your fingertips, according to the Red Cross.

The emergency app is available in app stores by searching for the American Red Cross or going to redcross.org/apps.
