Flooding, Heavy Rains Expected To Affect USVI This Weekend, National Weather Service Warns

News / Virgin Islands / Weather / May 5, 2018

The National Weather Service has issued an advisory for the U.S. Virgin Islands, predicting that the territory will be affected, beginning today, with heavy rainfall and flooding.

The advisory, issued at 5:00 a.m. today, said the flooding and heavy rains could lead to ponding of water in roads and poorly drained areas.

N.W.S. is also expecting sustained winds in excess of 20 MPH across the coastal areas and the local waters. For marine, N.W.S. said expect choppy seas of up to 7 feet across most local waters. There is also high risk of currents for some beaches on St. Croix, N.W.S. said.

The weather service said expect a wet pattern to continue through at least Sunday. Any persistent heavy rain could result in ponding of waters in poorly drained areas and urban flooding. Hazardous seas at 7 feet or more are expected across local and outer waters, except for the near shore waters on the west and south coast. The high risk of rip currents is expected to continue across some beaches along the Atlantic coast until at least Monday.
