ST. CROIX — Following the dismissal of classes at the St. Croix Central High School on Friday, the Department of Education issued a release explaining what occurred, and steps taken to rectify the issues.
D.O.E. said the Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority’s (WAPA) pump station that provides potable water to the C.H.S. campus experienced service failure that resulted in low water pressure, and eventually a loss of running water throughout the campus.
On Monday, D.O.E. announced that potable water service was restored. However, an early morning assessment of the pressure revealed the water flowing from the plumbing system was brownish in color. WAPA has since instructed school officials to run the water from several points-of-use until it appeared clear again. D.O.E. did not say whether the strategy worked.
In the interim, students, faculty and school staff have been provided with bottled water, courtesy of the large donation received by Viya and Icelandic Glacial in November, D.O.E. said. The department also purchased purified water for use in the kitchen as staff prepared meals for the outgoing and incoming students.
The school’s administration will continue to monitor the water quality and pressure at the school/
