Mapp Announces 24-Hour Territory-Wide Curfew ‘Until Further Notice’; Press Conference Set For 5:00 p.m.

News / Virgin Islands / September 21, 2017

ST. CROIX — Governor Kenneth Mapp on Wednesday afternoon announced a 24-hour territory-wide curfew to take effective immediately, which will be in place “until further notice,” he said. The governor said the move was necessary as the presence of residents on the streets “will only hamper clean-up efforts, and could delay the distribution of critically needed supplies.”

The governor’s previous curfew, which allowed residents to be out until 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, was not being heeded by residents, as many were out Wednesday morning, creating potentially deadly situations as massive trees along with utility poles were still all over the island’s roads.

Mr. Mapp also announced a press conference for 5:00 p.m. today, where he is expected to give updates relative to the government’s relief effort, which now includes St. Croix, after the island was badly damaged by Hurricane Maria on Wednesday night and Thursday morning. The 5:00 p.m. press event will be held at Government House here.

The governor issued a second statement today, the latest one also attempting to convey his administration’s determination to rebuild the territory.

“As difficult as things are, Virgin Islanders are resilient, and we will come through this together even stronger. Your government is doing everything in its power to restore our infrastructure and our communities,” Mr. Mapp said.
