Bureau Of Corrections Releases Additional Details On Suicide Incident

News / Virgin Islands / May 14, 2017

The Bureau of Corrections late Friday released additional details about a suicide incident that occurred at the Golden Grove Correction Facility last Monday, seemingly in an attempt to clear up what took place following a Consortium story with details provided by a source familiar with the incident.

As confirmed by our source, the man, 56, was a federal detainee who had only recently been remanded to the Golden Grove Correctional Facility. B.O.C. revealed that he had been charged with extortion, bribery, and threats to an individual, and had arrived at the facility on May 6. The source also said that the victim was on suicide watch, but had been removed.

But B.O.C. said the detainee was found in the cell after a court appearance. Our B.O.C. source, whose information to The Consortium has been accurate in the past, did not say that the victim had been in court.

B.O.C. again reiterated that the detainee was found unresponsive, and was rushed to the Juan F. Luis Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

In B.O.C.’s Monday release, Assistant Director Everette Hansen deemed the incident as unfortunate, but said that B.O.C. remains steadfast in its goal to provide a safe environment for inmates. “It is always unfortunate to report a loss of life; however, we remain steadfast to our mission to provide custody, security, and control,” he said.
